This dress and I might have a date together. It’s got all the right colors, right cut, right flare. We’d go apple picking together, stroll around the hip parts of town, walk down to the farmer’s market, basket in hand. It’d be the perfect relationship.
The dress, from Miso Vintage, is vintage. And as if it weren’t hard enough to decide if it should be travelling to my home right now, Miso Vintage has so many other gorgeous pieces. Won’t you tell me what your favorite is?

Have I ever mentioned that kitchens are my kryptonite? It’s dangerous. I see a well-designed one and just go weak at the knees.

I was browsing the Kitchen-of-the-Month archive at House Beautiful recently and discovered this kitchen with three islands. It’s like someone translated a professional kitchen into a home one. Thank goodness I was sitting down.

I can’t get over the little details: the flour jar, the blue and green storage containers, the farm-style sink…

I really can’t get enough.
Tell me, I’m not the only one obsessed with kitchens, am I? Or are you repeatedly drawn to a different room?

I finally had the chance to watch The September Issue this weekend, and I was fascinated by the look into the world of high fashion. My favorite part? Grace Coddington. A former model turned creative director, Grace is the visionary behind so many of the beautiful photo shoots we see in Vogue, like this Wizard of Oz shoot with Keira Knightley. Grace is a romantic and a dreamer, and the world desperately needs more people like her.
You’re a dreamer too, aren’t you?
(And don’t you think every woman needs a pair of red heels?)

I had a few hours with Audrey last night. On the big screen.

There’s a sweet little outdoor theater here in San Diego that shows old movies. Some are quite old, like Roman Holiday; others are more recent like The Princess Bride. The theater is a sweet place: they give everyone warm, fuzzy blankets, turn out heat lamps when the chill in the air becomes a bit too strong. There’s even a cartoon before the movie begins. And once the feature film gets going, you get to sit there in amazingly comfortable seats, watching it against a backdrop of stars.

And so I was positively charmed by Ms. Hepburn and Mr. Peck. The movie’s ending doesn’t necessarily give you what you want, but I can’t help but still love it because there’s so much truth to that ending. Now I can’t wait to get to Rome myself, though I think I’ll leave the guitar-smashing barge brawl to someone else.
Tell me: do you have a favorite old movie? Have you ever seen it on a big screen?
Have a beautiful weekend, friends! Make sure you get out and enjoy the changing autumn scenery.

Do you still remember what it was like to be little? When you believed the world was full of fairies and other creatures you couldn’t see, a world full of possibilities and adventures.

There were tea parties with exotic guests, afternoons spent outdoors looking up at the sky, doors with locks you could look through (how could you not? they were right at eye level back then)…

I had stuffed animals with names and personalities. Did you? I primarily blame this on my mother — but there was the cheerleading doll that once ran away for an adventure and Rocky Racoosa who left me little gifts when I was sick with chicken pox.

And do you ever still dream about flying?
(You know, as we grew up, the possibilities only changed — there are still so many out there.)

These tote bags from Apple & Bee are so adorable. How cute would they be filled from a day of shopping?
(It’s my first day of classes today, so I’m off being all academic-y!)

I adore autumn, but after spotting pieces from Monique Lhuillier‘s Spring 2011 collection on elephantine…well, I’m looking forward to spring.

I’m sure it’ll be here before I know it.

Over the weekend, I had the chance to spend a day with the very lovely Lillian of Unstitched. She was sweet enough to drive down to San Diego from LA and we spent the time eating delicious food, wandering around an art fair, and staring at the gorgeous views at the Hotel del Coronado. I also knew I had to take her to a little store in North Park called Pigment. They were selling Heirloom seeds. I’ve had a serious hankering for a garden of my own.
Then I remembered spying these gorgeous vintage spoons, printed with the names of veggies and herbs, in the etsy shop of Vintage Garden.

Wouldn’t they be a wonderful addition to a little starter garden?

Maybe even someday I’ll work my way up to a serious garden like Abigail has.

I had a lovely lunch with Heather yesterday and at one point she reminded to me that I’m an artist. It’s easy for me to forget that sometimes. I don’t paint or sew or carve wood; I’m not too crafty. I do sing and make up lots of funny little songs, but I don’t write them down. In my theater classes in college, the one tool I used and refined was my imagination; I worked on it quite vigorously — it was easy. Perhaps it’s imagination that makes a person an artist. I always have good ideas, can usually suggest things to people they hadn’t thought of before, like to shift my focus and see the world in new ways. And imagination is one of the things I love so much about this community: you wonderful people are just full of it.
So this weekend, find time for imagination. Read a book. Create something. Build a pillow fort. Transform a box. Stare at the sky. Dream, and dream big.
A few little links for you:
Have you seen the first issue of Rue? Delicious visual overload.
Seriously can’t stop laughing at these posts. Pretty much all of them. I’ve been pairing them with my metaphorical morning coffee all week.
If you’re interested in helping me with this project (it’s the stuff in italics), you just may get something sweet sent your way!
Have a dreamy weekend, friends!
